Science

At Aldersbrook Science is practical and engaging so that all pupils feel involved and confident in each of the topics and all of the skills they are learning. The practical nature of the subject can inspire a curious mind and help to create lifelong learners as well as encourage them to have the independence to develop their own knowledge and skills.

The Science curriculum at Aldersbrook builds on previous knowledge and skills, allowing children to revisit topics in order to increase understanding and allow them to feel confident about moving on. Each unit is taken from the National Curriculum and has them been split into learning objectives which follow on from each other. At the beginning of each unit there is a section on previous learning which covers objectives from previous years. This enables teachers to pre-asses the knowledge and skills the children already have and plug any gaps if necessary. These recaps should ensure the children are confident when they are pushed on and curious to find out more.

The units also map out what comes next, so teachers avoid pushing children on too quickly and can instead concentrate on delivering a breadth of study to ensure children are given the best chance of progressing. The curriculum also provides space for the pupils to express their choice and voice and adapt the curriculum to cover some of the things they want to study, building their curiosity.

  • Justifies and links understanding

Rocks & Soils: The year is 2020 and we no longer use plastics in any house building materials. Design a house purely of rock. Where will you need to use porous rocks? Rocks that do not transfer heat easily? Rocks that will allow underfloor heating to heat through?

Plants: Suggest a garden design for someone who likes privacy and bright autumn colours?
