Step In for Year 6
We’re pleased to be taking part in Redbridge Council’s new Step In programme. Our school is one of a select number piloting this important initiative, which is set to launch across the borough in the coming year.
The Step In programme, which spans Years 6 to 9, forms part of Redbridge Council’s wider This Has To Stop campaign. It’s designed to equip young people with the knowledge and confidence to recognise and challenge harassment and misogynistic behaviours. Over five lessons, our Year 6 students will explore related themes in an age-appropriate manner – this includes respectful versus disrespectful behaviours, setting personal boundaries, and how to be an active and safe bystander in online and offline environments. These lessons are especially relevant in the Summer term as our Year 6 pupils prepare to take the next step into secondary school and greater independence.
Developed in line with Ofsted recommendations, the programme complements our existing curriculum. All resources have been produced in close cooperation with school staff to be relatable and suitable for Year 6 age groups. Student safety is at the heart of the programme, and all bystander behaviours taught in the lessons are tailored to this developmental stage, focusing on reporting issues to trusted adults and supporting peers. Additional sources of support will also be shared with students should they ever feel the need to seek help.
We encourage you to talk to your child about what they are learning in the Step In sessions using the resources below. The resources focus on respectful behaviour and how to respond when they see others in need of support. This resource supports conversations with your child in your home environment over the summer.
